Show One, Bury One

In this activity students were put in groups of 3 randomly. They were shown the sequence of cards on top A, 5, 2, 4, 3 on the bottom. Then I unloaded them show one (flip it over), bury one (put it on the bottom), show one, bury one until the 5 cards are unloaded. They come out in order A, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Students then went to their groups and white boards and tried to figure out the order for
6 cards, 7 cards etc. all the way to 13 cards.

Here is some of the work.

Many groups quickly figured out a strategy to unload the cards all the way from ace to king.

Then I threw them this bomb. Unload thirteen cards. A to K . Do it by spelling the letters of the card. For example A bury, C bury, E show (should be an ace) then T bury, W bury, O show (should be a two) then T bury, H bury, R bury, E bury, E show (should be a three) etc. until the A to K is unloaded . They needed to order 13 cards. If they did this I asked for the entire deck with spelling as above. Here is what they came up with.

For the 13 card unloading

For both questions -13 cards and 52 cards

Unloading the cards in order for the full deck.

Required problem solving, reasoning and proving, communication, reflecting and choosing a strategy. Well done!
